In some cases our foods, that being our fruits and vegetables, have nutrient levels 5, 10, 20 sometimes 50 times less nutritional value as food did back in the 50's.
As a result of large scale agriculture we have a problem called the "dilution effect". What this means is that our soils are fast becoming more and more nutrient deficient.
Combined with the hybridisation of many food crops for the benefit of production and profit we end up with more and more food that, although might look good, in fact is actually "nutritionally bankrupt!"
For instance, to compare the nutrient levels from 1 plate of spinach from the 1950s to today, you will need about 40+ plates.
What is concerning about this issue is that, it all starts in the soil and is working its way up the food chain and unfortunately ends up with us.
Our fruits and vegetables are grown with artificial fertilisers, sprayed with herbicides and pesticides and then we often pick some things green and unripened. To add to this concoction we rinse, spray, gas, wax them in more toxic chemicals so they last the journey half way around the world so we get them in perfect condition and to top it off, most countries fumigate their imported foods with methyl bromide which not only is toxic but has a severe effect on the ozone layer.
You can wash your veggies all you like but most chemical residues reside in the flesh and skins and they ain't coming out. They then enter the food cycle and into our bodies. Testing done reveals that the levels of these chemicals are safe for human consumption but if you combine that with everything else we are eating and exposed to, you end up with one giant chemical concoction.
Add years of consuption to this and you have one very overloaded system. Our bodies are well equipped to detoxify themselves however they cannot cope with the burden of these toxins at these levels, and an overloaded run down system will struggle even more . Enter disease, immune deficiency, and illness of every kind.
I don't care what anyone says, no chemicals are safe to eat.
When are we going to wake up and realise that this is killing us! and effecting our generations to follow.
So what can we do about it?
- Where and if possible grow your own!
- Buy local and ethically grown produce and/or organic!
- Get involved in a community garden!
- Boycott imported foods and those from questionable sources!
- Catch up on what you miss out on with good supplementation!
- and always, ash your fruit and veg
Remember "you are what you eat" so make it your aim to find out where your food comes from!
